Gorgeous variegated wildflower meadow for the cottage garden ?

The Rédei Kertimag Zrt. contains the seeds of wild flowers, the gems of the Hungarian Flora, which grow in meadows and pastures and are well known to everyone.

Where can we recommend the Wildflower Meadow Grass Seed Mix ?

The maintenance of an irrigated ornamental lawn is a costly and labour-intensive operation. An alternative to this is the Wildflower Meadow Seed Mix, which can be sown in a little-used area away from the house. An excellent pairing is to sow an irrigated ornamental lawn close to the house or holiday home, while sowing Wildflower Meadow seed mix in the less frequently used part of the garden.
It can also be used to flower previously farmed, possibly urban, heavily disturbed areas where you plan to create hiding and feeding places for beneficial organisms for years to come. The wildflower meadow is an eye-catcher, low maintenance and provides habitat for a wide variety of small creatures. It offers a varied picture in height and colour composition.

The composition of the seed mix of the Rédei Kertimag Wildflower Meadow:

Note: Wildflower seeds are characterised by a hard shell, not all seeds will germinate in any given year. The species composition of the sown area will continue to change over time, with more and more species from the local flora appearing. The mixture will behave differently under different site and climatic conditions. The exact composition of the grass seed mixture is indicated on the label on the side of the box.

As the name suggests, our seeds are made up of several different mixtures. We distinguish between 3 main components: wildflower mix, buttercups, grass seed mix.

Wildflower mix:

The seed mix contains seeds of native wildflowers grown in cultivation but without selective selection. The proportion of each seed in the mixture, as in the wild, varies, but includes all of the above. All the species listed are native to the Hungarian flora.
Achillea millefolium, Anthemis arvensis, Anthyllis vulneraria, Centaurea cyanus 'wild', Centaurea jacea, Chrysanthemum leucanthemum 'wild', Cichorium intybus, Consolida orientalis (Eastern larkspur), Consolida regalis (Cowslip), Coronilla varia (Spotted crownwort), Daucus carota (Common carrot), Echium vulgare (Blonde snake-grass), Galium verum (Milkweed), Hypericum perforatum (Common St. John's wort), Lathyrus tuberosus (Hazel-leaved sedge), Linum perenne (Wild flax), Malva sylvestris (Wood mallow), Melandrium album (Evening primrose), Matricaria inodora (Wild chamomile), Melilotus officinalis (Medicinal comfrey), Onobrichis arenaria (Sandy moor-wort), Origanum vulgare (Common pitch-grass), Papaver rhoeas (Field poppy), Plantago lanceolata, Salvia austriaca, Salvia nemorosa, Salvia pratensis, Saponaria officinalis, Silene vulgaris, Tragopogon orientalis and Vermiculite sowing aid.

Butterflies:

Trifolium repens (White Clover), Trifolium incarnatum (Purple Clover)

Grass seed mix:

Poa pratensis (Radish periwinkle), Agrostis capillaris (Cernatippan), Festuca rubra (Red fescue).

Planting the seed mixture of RED RED:

Soil preparation:

Planting the wildflower mix in a sunny area of appropriate size is recommended! A nutrient-rich soil will also encourage faster seed germination, so choose an area with less nutrients. In heavily weedy areas, it may be advisable to fallow the soil for a year, while weeds are constantly removed. Avoid deep tillage, ploughing or turning the soil too deeply, as this will encourage weed seeds that have been in the soil for many years to germinate. The surface should be carefully cleaned of vegetation and plant remains and shallowly loosened.

Pre-emergence weeding:

After preparing the soil, let the area rest for three weeks until the first weeds emerge. These are weed seeds that have emerged and germinated during the soil preparation. Carefully remove any weeds that are just emerging before sowing!
Sowing time: spring April-May or autumn September-October. In spring planting you should expect heavier weeding.

Sowing:

In well-prepared, well-soiled, weed-free, fine-gritty, sufficiently moist soil. Mix the seeds thoroughly and spread evenly over the surface of the soil in calm weather (20-30 g/m2 ) and rake shallowly to a depth of 0,5-1 cm. The use of a spreader trolley is recommended for even sowing. After sowing it is recommended to compact the area with a compaction roller. Ensure that the newly planted area is watered regularly so that the soil is constantly moist at a depth of 3-5 cm. In the case of heavy weed infestation, weed control mowing after sowing may be justified, using a mower blade set at a sufficiently high height (approx. 5-7 cm) without damaging the plants that are just sprouting.
The area must not dry out during the sprouting period!

Maintenance of the wildflower meadow:

The meadow has two flowering periods, the first from mid-May to mid-June, the second from mid-August to mid-September. In the summer, after the first mowing, the area has little ornamental value.

First mowing

The first mowing is recommended when the grass has reached a height of 6 to 8 cm. Only the upper third of the grass should be removed during the mowing. It is not necessary to remove the clippings to help maintain the soil nutrient level. Mowing is prohibited from late spring to allow wild flowers to develop.

Second mowing

A second mowing is recommended if the dry wild flowers are detrimental to the ornamental value of the lawn. If conditions are favourable, a second flowering can be expected afterwards. Even then, it is not necessary to remove the clippings.
The last mowing is recommended in October at the latest, when it is advisable to cut the plants shorter (about 5 cm). It is also a good time to remove the trimmings!

Caution: Grass should only be mown with a knife mower or hand mower, as chain mowers damage the plants by damaging the stems!

Watering:

Watering is recommended according to the knowledge of the area and the needs of the plants.
